New requirements for 2018

The latest changes to MOT testing come into force from 20th May 2018. The new road worthiness requirements are tougher and could result in more people receiving fail notices. Below is a list of the changes to ensure you are aware of them. New checks include:

• The reversing lights on vehicles registered in 2009 onwards
• Daytime running lights
• Front fog lights
• Prop shafts
• The condition and security of bumpers
• The condition of the rear drive shaft
• The floor condition
• Cab step and security
• Undertray security
• Noise suppression equipment
• Emission control equipment
• Engine malfunction light
• Fluids leaks that could affect the environment

Tougher MOTs for diesel

The biggest change will affect diesel vehicles. Consequently, there will be much stricter smoke limits to reduce emissions. If any smoke is detected coming from the exhaust it will result in automatic failure of the MOT. In addition checks on diesel particulate filters (DPFs) are coming into force to make sure they are working.

Any vehicle will fail the MOT if a defect is dangerous. In these cases the owner will not be able to drive the vehicle away to get it repaired before returning for re-testing. Instead the vehicle must remain at the testing station until repairs are done or it can be transported away.
