Preparing your motorhome for an MOT

You might think that it is okay but there is plenty that you can do to increase the chances of your vehicle passing a motorhome MOT.

One of the first things you need to do is be aware of when it is due for testing. This is so that you don’t forget and find that you are unable to take it on a trip. Then, you need to find somewhere that can accept your motorhome. Not all garages will be able to test the vehicle legally or have enough space.

What To Check

  1. Turning your lights on can let you know if any of them need changing. You can check this yourself by parking near a wall when it is dark, or ask someone to assist you. Remember, there are numerous lights that your vehicle uses including the indicators, brakes, hazard, and fog lights. They all need to be in working order.
  2. Your tyres need to be the right pressure and must have the correct tread depth. This is the part of the vehicle that grips the road. As a result when they are worn they won’t connect as well, drastically increasing stopping distance. It is vital that these are right for safety and passing this test.
  3. A very common and frustrating way to fail your MOT is not having the right fluid levels in your vehicle. It doesn’t take long to top them up and they are also important for running the motorhome. Things like having an empty washer reservoir can make your view dangerous. Checking them will make you more likely to pass and it is good maintenance.
  4. Wipers are likely something you don’t concern yourself with until there is an issue. You must ensure that they are in good condition for the test though, meaning no tearing or splitting in the rubber. They should be able to clear your windscreen without smearing. If there is an issue, they will need replacing and fitting properly.
