Encouraging more females to become mechanics

Ellie May Owens is our very own Level 3 Mechanic working here at C&N Car Services. She wants to be a role model for other girls, encouraging them to consider careers in the stereotypically male dominated Motor Industry.

She attended a West Lancashire College Open Evening while studying at Lathom High School. Seeing as the industry is so male-dominated, Ellie hadn’t considered studying to be a mechanic. She was a little apprehensive about launching into the career. However, the tutors for the course were inspirational. Their encouragement led her to attend a taster day. It is here that she found her interest in engines and cars. Then, Ellie embarked on her career in Motor Vehicle Maintenance.

Ellie has a real interest in learning new skills along with a natural talent when it comes to working with cars. There was never an obstacle with her being the only female on the course. This was thanks to the encouraging students and supportive staff. She believes the course gave her knowledge, skills, and more confidence. She loved how she got to learn something different each day and everyone was so supportive.

Now Ellie wants to encourage more females to take on careers as Motor Mechanics. She says it is hard work but it is also very interesting and it provides you with the opportunity to do something you really enjoy every day.
